Abu Dhabi property magnate has smashed the world record for the most expensive number plate, paying - ready for this? - £7.1 million on the plate '1'. The car number plate auction was held at the cherished Emirates Palace Hotel.

"I bought it because it's the best number," said Saeed Khouri at the auction in the United Arab Emirates. "I bought it because I want to be the best in the world." Modest chap. He was determined to buy the plate at any cost and was not considering selling the registration.

Mr Khouri's purchase trumps the previous record of £3.47 million paid by his cousin for the number plate '5'. Six bidders fought vigourously for the rights to display this fabulous number plate on their car.

The profits from the auction will go towards building a recovery centre for road accident victims. The amount of money generated at the number plate auction astounded even the organisers themselves. "The final value of the number plate exceeded our wildest hopes and dreams," said the Managing Director of the number plate auction house.

Mr Khouri did not confirm what car would become the lucky bearer of the '1' plate, but in Top Gear's opinion there's only one choice: the glamorous VW '1-litre' prototype. Efficient and stylish.
